Editorial policy
How we research, write, check and update what we publish.
Our sources
Health information on this site is based on the NHS, NICE (guideline NG209), the National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training (NCSCT), Cochrane reviews, Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). We link to our sources on each page, and prefer guidance and systematic reviews to single studies or news reports.
How we write
- Plain, warm UK English, with no shame or blame. We say "slip" and "reset", never "failure".
- We never say or suggest that vaping is as harmful as smoking, or more harmful. For people who used to smoke, every plan we publish says that going back to cigarettes is the one move to avoid.
- No "guaranteed", "easy" or "quit in X days" claims, and no success rates that the evidence doesn't support.
- Medicines: for prescription-only medicines (such as cytisine and varenicline) we give factual information and suggest you talk to your GP, pharmacist or Stop Smoking Service. We never link to places to buy them. For nicotine replacement therapy bought over the counter, we describe what each product is licensed for.
- Under-18s: we don't give advice about medicines or nicotine replacement to anyone under 18. We point them to their GP, school nurse, Stop Smoking Service or Childline.
Medical review
Every page with health information is reviewed by a named clinician before it is published, and shows who reviewed it and when. Pages are reviewed again at least every 12 months, or sooner when guidance changes. Read our medical review policy.
Use of AI tools
We may use AI tools to help with research and first drafts. A person writes and edits every page, and no health content is published until a clinician has reviewed it. We never publish health content that was generated automatically and not reviewed.
Advertising and independence
We take no money from the vape, tobacco or nicotine-pouch industries, and never advertise or link to vapes, e-liquids or pouches. Advertisers have no say over what we write. Any paid or affiliate link is labelled "Ad" next to it.
